Geist's Story

I was notified that there was a young Weimaraner at a rural animal control facility.

When I called, I learned that the Animal Control Officer had picked a female Weimaraner up when she was found running along side a rural highway. She was injured, but they had to hold her for 5 days before I could come pick her up.

She was picked up on the day she became available, and transported directly to my vet. X-rays showed that the back left leg was severely broken. Initial thought was that the leg could be saved. When the vet went in to attempt to repair the bone, he determined that the break was too severe, with too much additional damage to the bone and surrounding tissues. The only options were to amputate her leg, or euthanize her.

After talking with the vet, there was no question in my mind that amputation was the correct decision.

I named her "Geist". It's German for "Spirit", and this beautiful girl has proven time and again that she has plenty. Within hours of waking up from surgery, she was up and walking, and within a couple of weeks, she was running and playing.

She's really something else. Even after all she has been through, she's super-sweet, friendly, loving and wonderful. From the day she came into my home, she fit in like she'd always been here. She enjoys playing in the backyard, and will fetch her toys tirelessly, but she equally enjoys curling up next to me on the couch.

Geist went to her new home in the spring of 2006. She's doing wonderfully!
